Screening Mammogram

A screening mammogram is a 3D X-ray of both breasts used in the early detection of breast cancer. Annual mammograms are the best way to detect breast cancer early, when it is most treatable.

During your appointment, you will meet with our nurse practitioner or physician assistant to discuss your personal and family history, have a clinical breast exam, learn how to do a monthly breast self-examination, and have plenty of time to ask any questions.

For your convenience and peace of mind, we offer results and many follow-up tests during the same visit.

Who should be screened?

  • The American College of Radiology recommends that women at average risk for breast cancer should begin annual screening mammography at age 40.
  • High-risk women — those who have a mother or sister with breast cancer or who have a gene mutation that may be associated with a risk of developing breast cancer — should begin annual screening 10 years earlier than the age your relative was diagnosed beginning at age 25.

How to Prepare for a Mammogram

  • Schedule your screening mammogram 1 week after your menstrual period begins. This is when your breasts are less tender.
  • Wear two-piece clothing.
  • Avoid deodorant, lotions, and powder on exam day.
  • Complete the detailed medical history form before you arrive.

New patient? If you have never had a mammogram at Englewood Hospital, but have had breast imaging tests in the past from another facility, we need to get copies of your previous films ahead of time. Learn how to request and send us these previous results.

Diagnostic Mammogram

A diagnostic mammogram is an X-ray exam used for further evaluation after an abnormal result from a screening mammogram or if you have symptoms such as pain, nipple discharge, masses or lumps.

Appointments for Diagnostic Mammograms

  • If your Englewood Health Physician Network doctor has placed an order for a diagnostic mammogram, you should receive a text message or email with instructions to schedule.
  • If you have a paper order or need any assistance scheduling, call our Imaging Scheduling Center at 201-894-3640

Breast Ultrasound and MRI

Further tests may be required after you get your preliminary mammogram results. In these situations, we may perform a breast ultrasound or biopsy before you leave. Also, if you have dense breasts, nipple discharge, breast implants, or history of breast cancer, you may require more specialized testing. We offer:

  • Ultrasound – a pain-free test using high-frequency sound waves. Ultrasound is often used to determine if a suspicious area is a lymph node, cyst (a noncancerous, fluid-filled pocket) or solid tissue that may require a biopsy.
  • Breast MRI – a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test to detect and monitor breast cancer. It is also used in women who are at high risk for developing breast cancer and can be helpful in evaluating women with breast implants and nipple discharge.
