Three decades of leadership and innovation in transfusion-free medical and surgical care

For three decades, Englewood Health’s Institute for Patient Blood Management and Bloodless Medicine and Surgery has been a world leader in the field.

Tens of thousands of patients from the U.S. and abroad have received medical treatment and undergone highly complex procedures without blood transfusions at Englewood Health. Our program provides accessible, high-quality care that is based on the best that medicine, science, and technology have to offer. Our team works closely with each patient to ensure their wishes are met.

Safe and effective transfusion-free medical and surgical techniques can:

  • Improve patient outcomes
  • Eliminate the risks associated with blood transfusions
  • Respect the needs of patients for whom blood transfusion is not an option

Patient blood management is a multidisciplinary technique. Our program, which focuses on improving the health of the patient’s own blood volume and supply rather than relying on donor blood, serves as a reference for national and international standards in the treatment of anemia in surgical patients.

Bloodless Techniques We Offer

Many people object to receiving blood or blood products. Jehovah’s Witnesses, for example, object based on religious beliefs. Others do so as a result of healthcare concerns, knowledge of potential complications, or other personal convictions.

Patient blood management and bloodless surgery involves a combination of medical and surgical techniques, as well as technology and strategies to decrease blood loss and enhance a patient’s own blood supply. Before surgery, based on the results of a patient’s blood test, doctors may recommend medications and dietary supplements to ensure optimal levels of hemoglobin (an oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells). After surgery, blood loss will be minimized and blood production enhanced through medication, nutrition therapy, and technology.

Our techniques and tools include:

  • Minimally invasive surgery and meticulous surgical techniques
  • Blood salvage/cell saver
  • Oximetry
  • Argon beam coagulator
  • Hemostatic drug therapy
  • Volume expanders and hemodilution
  • Synthetic erythropoietin
  • Harmonic scalpel
  • Electrocautery
