Englewood Hospital’s voluntary inpatient psychiatric unit is designed for people needing around-the-clock treatment.

We offer two programs: one for adults 18 years and older; the other for adults 60 and older. These intensive, structured, and physician-supervised programs aim to quickly return patients to their optimal level of functioning outside the hospital.

We will work with you to develop and agree upon a treatment plan and provide you with a daily schedule of treatment-related activities.

Why might I need inpatient psychiatric care?

Our adult program treats all major psychiatric disorders, including:

  • Bipolar disorder
  • Depression
  • Schizophrenia
  • Anxiety
  • Psychoses

In addition, our geriatric program treats patients who may be showing severe symptoms as a result of dementia, such as:

  • Behavioral disturbance
  • Suicidal thoughts/attempts
  • Sleep or eating disturbance
  • Severe anxiety
  • Confusion/disorientation
  • Thoughts of harming others
  • Severe agitation

What can I expect as a patient?

Within 24 hours of being admitted to our program, we will work with you to develop and agree upon a treatment plan for your medical and psychiatric needs and management of symptoms. We will provide you with a daily schedule of treatment-related activities, with opportunities to focus on recovery. Your treatment will include:

  • Individualized nursing care
  • Medication
  • Individual and group therapy
  • Consultation with other specialists as needed

Throughout your hospital stay, you will participate in goal setting meetings. These groups are designed to assist both the patient and staff in developing a concise focus for the day to support the overall goals of the treatment plan. Patients focus on goal setting, goal achievement, and goal modification.

Medication

Medications are important to help stabilize and treat people with psychiatric conditions. We will provide education about the medications we prescribe and the importance of taking the medications as ordered. Always ask questions if the medication does not seem to be working or if you want to discontinue a medication for any reason.

Individual and Group Therapy

One-on-one therapy helps patients better manage feelings and behaviors, make appropriate decisions, and achieve personal goals. Group therapy offers the support and companionship of other people experiencing the same or similar problems and issues. There are many different kinds of group therapies, but all groups can help you grow emotionally and solve personal problems.

Patient and Family Education

Our team can work closely with a patient’s family to assess the medical and psychiatric needs of the patient and develop a treatment plan. Family members and other loved ones are encouraged to visit and call the patient during the treatment period. Maintaining contact helps the patient feel connected and supported by the family during treatment and reassures the family that their loved one is in good hands and treated with care and compassion.

Other Supportive Services

Other supportive services such as spiritual groups, physical therapy, art therapy, and pet therapy may be used in conjunction with other therapies and activities to promote healing.

Discharge Planning

Discharge planning begins when you are admitted. The goal of a successful discharge is to provide a seamless transition to the best environment for continued success. Our social workers align medical and emotional care providers with existing resources to develop a supportive environment for the patient. We will provide the patient with a discharge instruction document and refer the patient to appropriate services and other health care providers outside of the hospital to maintain recovery.
