Englewood Health NewsEnglewood Health Receives Highest Quality Rating for Lung Cancer Surgery — Two Years Running
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons awards Englewood Health its top 3-star designation for exceptional surgical outcomes.
November 10, 2025 — For the second consecutive year, Englewood Health has earned a 3-star rating—the highest possible score—for patient care and outcomes in lung cancer resection from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). This “better-than-expected” composite quality rating places Englewood Health among the elite programs for general thoracic surgery in the United States and Canada.
“Receiving this top rating for the second year in a row is a reflection of our team’s consistency and dedication,” said Christos Stavropoulos, MD, director of thoracic oncology at The Lefcourt Family Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center and chief of thoracic surgery at Englewood Health. “Our thoracic surgeons, interventional pulmonologists, nurses, anesthesiologists, and perioperative staff all play a role in ensuring patients receive the safest, most advanced surgical care possible.”
A 3-star, “better-than-expected,” quality score indicates that Englewood Health’s performance on lung cancer resection is significantly higher than expected for its specific case-mix. Approximately 10% of participants receive the “better-than-expected" rating. The latest analysis of data for lung cancer resection covers a three-year period, from July 2022 to June 2025.
“The Society of Thoracic Surgeons congratulates STS National Database participants who have received three-star ratings,” said David M. Shahian, MD, chair of the Task Force on Quality Measurement. “Only a very small percentage of participants nationally achieve this important recognition.”
