New minimally invasive procedure expands treatment options for patients with severe mitral valve disease
Oct. 6, 2026 — The heart team at Englewood Hospital has successfully performed its first transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR), becoming the first hospital in Bergen County to offer the minimally invasive procedure.
TMVR offers a new treatment option for patients with severe mitral valve disease who are at high risk for surgery or have limited treatment options. The procedure is fully percutaneous, meaning physicians can replace the mitral valve using a catheter inserted through a vein in the leg, without open-heart surgery.
“TMVR opens a new door for patients with severe mitral valve disease,” said Ramin Hastings, MD, medical director of the Structural Heart and Valve Program at Englewood Hospital. “Being able to replace the mitral valve through a minimally invasive approach allows us to extend advanced treatment to more patients and make a meaningful difference in their symptoms and quality of life.”
The procedure was performed using the SAPIEN M3 transcatheter mitral valve replacement system from Edwards Lifesciences. The technology allows a replacement valve to be delivered to the heart through a catheter inserted through the femoral vein in the leg.
The mitral valve helps control blood flow through the heart. Conditions such as mitral regurgitation, which occurs when the valve does not close completely and allows blood to leak backward, can disrupt blood flow and lead to symptoms that significantly affect a person’s health and quality of life.
TMVR further expands Englewood Hospital’s heart valve treatment options. The Structural Heart and Valve Program offers advanced, catheter-based procedures to repair or replace damaged heart valves, including TAVR for the aortic valve and catheter-based treatments for the mitral and tricuspid valves.
“This milestone reflects our continued commitment to bringing the latest advances in cardiovascular care to our patients,” said Joseph De Gregorio, MD, executive director of cardiovascular services at Englewood Health. “Adding transcatheter mitral valve replacement means more patients with complex heart valve disease can access advanced treatment options right here in their community.”
